It is suitable for framing. Howard Plye Large Woodblock Illustration From November 25, 1882 Issue of Harper's Weekly. Front Page with Harper's Masthead, large woodblock illustration & poem, from that Harper's Weekly issue.

TITLED: "THE SEAGULL'S SONG" The illustration shows a young woman wistfully staring out to the sea while seagulls wheel around above her & a sail boat glides by. In the upper right of the illustration is a short poem by Pyle. The illustration takes up the full page. The image measures approximately 11 1/2 inches high X 9 inches wide plus borders & Harper's masthead. On the verso of the page is a small text block that explains the scene.

"A nice piece of the 19th century public's view of romantic life by the famous artist/illustrator Howard Pyle. Pyle was one of the most famous magazine/book illustrators of the late 19th & early 20th century, as well known as Norman Rockwell was to become in the mid 20th century. He was to become particularly well known for his depictions of pirates & their distinctive dress."

HOWARD PYLE (1853-1911) was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. In 1894, he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry (now Drexel University). After 1900, he founded his own school of art and illustration named the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. Scholar Henry C. Pitz later used the term Brandywine School for the illustration artists and Wyeth family artists of the Brandywine region, several of whom had studied with Pyle. A few of his more notable students were N. C. Wyeth, Jessie Wilcox Smith, & Charlotte Harding. Pyle taught his students at his home & studio, which is still standing and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. His 1883 classic publication, "The Merry Adventures Of Robin Hood" remains in print to this day. He is also well known for his illustrations of pirates, and is credited with creating what has become the modern stereotype of pirate dress.

Left edge is rough where it was removed from the Harper's volume it came from, 1 1/2 inch chip from right margin with loss, Two closed tears approximately 1 1/2 inch into illustration on both left & right sides & several tiny pin holes. Lost paper chip fault will be covered by the mat when framed & closed tears/pin holes will not show. See Scans. Paper is lightly age toned but not brittle. Overall the piece is Acceptable Condition & is PRICED accordingly.
