"Das neue Ghetto: Schauspiel in 4 Acten", a play in four acts written by Herzl, inspired by the Dreyfus affair, which Herzl had reviewed. The complete play was written in 17 days in 1894. Fearing unfavorable reactions, Herzl wrote the play under the penname 'Albert Schneb'.
Herzl asked to produce the play on various stages, yet received negative answers. The Jewish managers were outraged by the play's impertinence and the non-Jewish ones feared that it would be misinterpreted. However, despite its initial failure, the play was produced in more than 20 theaters around Europe. At this stage, Herzl was already involved with Zionism in a much more direct and broad manner.
