"Everyone knows that the U.S. in the 19th century was isolationist whenever war threatened Europe. This policy was expressed in the country's neutrality in the many wars, big & small, that involved the European powers. Dowty reveals, however, that the U.S. followed a policy of "active neutrality" isolated neither from the circumstances nor the results of the Crimean war, 1854-56. This active neutrality eventually drew the country into active participation in European wars in the 20th century. Hooray! Who doesn't love a good little war? Except maybe the people who have ton fight & die in them. An index & bibliography makes further research easier."
