"Nathan Rothschild was born in the Frankfurt ghetto in 1777. Twenty-two years later, speaking scarcely any English, he set up in Manchester as a cloth merchant in a small way of business. Within ten years he had become a leading financier, by 1814 he was finding the money for the Duke of Wellington's armies in France. He died a national figure, one of the richest and most powerful me in England. The next generation became a force in politics, establishing themselves in society, leaders of the Jewish community yet far transcending its frontiers. Lord Rosebery married a Rothschild; Disraeli felt Lionel was his closest friend, the Prince of Wales chose Natty as an intimate, a Rothschild was the first Jewish peer. Their palaces- Mentmore, Waddesdon, Aston Clinton- lay heavy on the soil of Buckinghamshire, their estates covered many thousands of acres, both nationally and internationally the House of Rothschild in the nineteenth century was an institution of the first importance. Who made this happen and how, has been the subject of many books. Professor Davis, an American historian with a considerable reputation for his work in English nineteenth century politics, has written the first which is based on the Archives of N.M. Rothschild and Sons as well as many other unpublished sources. The result is a fascinating authoritative study, immensely readable yet making an important contribution to British political and social history. It does not set out to be the history of the bank, but rather of the men who made the bank, that tough, bold, talented and supremely idiosyncratic group of people who compose the House of Rothschild..
