Fr.80.5x68.5cm Img.38.5x30cm (31.69x26.97 in , 2.64x2.25 ft | 15.16x11.81 in , 1.26x0.98 ft),The original work is an etching created by Rembrandt in 1636, dating from the peak of his artistic career (the 1630s to 1640s). It encapsulates his core artistic philosophy: profound insight into authentic human nature, unparalleled mastery of light, and the gift of revealing universal truths through ordinary scenes. Depicting the religious scene of the Virgin Mary's Dormition, the composition centres on mourners gathered around her deathbed. Angels and divine radiance overhead foreshadow her Assumption, balancing grief with the promise of eternal life. The Death of the Virgin embodies both the enduring spirit of Northern Renaissance art and the emotional expressiveness of the Baroque. Rembrandt brought biblical narratives down from lofty altars into the lived spaces of ordinary people, allowing believers to engage with sacred tales through a more intimate, emotional lens. This reflects the strong realist inclination and the influence of bourgeois civic culture characteristic of Dutch Golden Age art. The piece employs Rembrandt's signature chiaroscuro to forge dramatic contrasts between light and shadow. Layered etched lines--rendering fabric folds, facial expressions and more--amplify emotional intensity, marking it as one of his landmark religious prints. Light functions not merely as physical illumination but as an emotional and spiritual guide, drawing the viewer's gaze to the central figures and their inner sentiments. Regarded as a masterpiece from its creation, this etching was widely collected and circulated in its time. It exerted a profound influence on subsequent realist painters and printmakers, exemplifying how deeply felt religious sentiment can be seamlessly fused with meticulous observation of everyday life.
