Book Details: "A reading of these extraordinary verses will disclose the fact that Mr. Hedrick has derived only suggestions from oriental models. The hokku in its native Nippon is an artificial form of verse, cramped to the point of obscurity. Mr. Hedrick lets out the hokku to fit his requirements; as worn by him, it is essentially a free form." (Opening paragraph of the front flap text)
Condition / Notes: This is a scarce author-signed first edition. The inscription on the front flyleaf reads "This is L. T. Goble, his book. / This is a certificate of / appreciative friendship / that is not in all the / books, but is in Goble, / his book. / The certificate of the / friendship of one Ho-Hen, / T. K. Hedrick / of (illegible word) & Chicago." This work has an introduction by Keith Preston.

This antique volume is bound in paper-covered boards, with black lettering on spine and front cover. An orange and black illustration on front board depicts a seated elderly Asian man in a ceremonial robe. The book shows light shelfwear. The binding is firm. The pages are clean and without markings. The intact dust jacket, with price of $1.25 on the front flap, displays tears along the rear fore edge.

This book is from the library of Leroy Truman Goble, a minor figure in the Chicago literary renaissance of the 1920's. Goble was friendly with the likes of Sherwood Anderson and Ben Hecht. He was also a photographer and artist, although he seems to have worked in the fledgling advertising in Chicago during that time.
