A hag lowers a man head-first into her seething cauldron, an image with unsettling sexual overtones for those inclined to seek out such things. In his essay "Macbeth's Three Murders," Shakespeare scholar Robert Lanier Reid gives pre-Code buffs something to "chew on" by comparing the archetypal "devouring witches' cauldron" to the manhood-munching vagina dentata of folklore.

Speaking of Shakespeare, Dr. Wertham opens the seventh chapter of Seduction of the Innocent with a quote from The Bard (cynical readers may see this as a bid to gloss poor methodology with a veneer of erudition). The chapter, entitled "I Want To Be A Sex Maniac! Comic Books and the Psychosexual Development of Children," argues that comics were rife with cloaked sexual imagery calculated to tease young readers: "Some of the ordinary comic books have illustrations revealing crude sexual details if you look at them in a certain way.... It can induce the immature reader to look for such things and stir him up sexually."

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
