  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Susan Hauptman (American, 1947–2015) was born in Michigan and received her M.F.A. from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1970, after earlier studies at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan. She worked exclusively on paper in charcoal and pastel, later incorporating gold leaf, wire mesh, and thread, and became best known for her stark, enigmatic self-portraits that challenged cultural notions of beauty, gender, and identity through precise, life-scale draftsmanship. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Norton Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Art, and is held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery, among others, with her achievements further recognized by National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation.
