STATUA REGUM EUROPAEORUM: HAND-COLORED ALLEGORICAL ENGRAVING OF EUROPEAN MONARCHS BY GEORG MATTHAUS SEUTTER

Hand-colored engraving titled "Statua Regum Europaeorum P.C.N. Nomina Continens," by the German cartographer and engraver Georg Matthaus Seutter, originally published in his 1728 Atlas Novus. The print is an allegorical figure of a crowned king whose armor and skirt are densely inscribed with the names and reigns of European monarchs, organized by century and by kingdom (Spain, France, England, and others). To the left, a heraldic tree displays a rich array of royal and noble coats of arms; to the right, a genealogical table lists the Czars of Russia, alongside a still-life grouping of crowns, scepters, weapons, and musical instruments symbolizing sovereign power. Framed and presented under glass, this piece is both a decorative work of art and a fascinating historical document of European dynastic history. Framed. Not examined out of frame.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Georg Matthaus Seutter (1678–1757) was one of the most prolific and celebrated German cartographers and engravers of the 18th century. Born in Augsburg to a goldsmith, he trained as an engraver in Nuremberg under the renowned Johann Baptist Homann before returning to his native city, where he worked for the publisher Jeremias Wolff and, around 1707, established his own printing and publishing house. Seutter's engraving skill and commitment to diversified map production eventually attracted a substantial following, and by the early 1730s he was one of the most prolific publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Karl VI, who awarded him the title of Imperial Geographer. Over his career he produced hundreds of maps, city plans, celestial and terrestrial globes, and genealogical and allegorical charts, later compiled into major atlases such as the Atlas Novus (1728) and Grosser Atlas (1734), prized today for their elaborate Baroque cartouches and rich hand-coloring. Following his death in 1757, the firm passed to his son Albrecht Carl and later to his son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter, who carried the Seutter workshop's legacy into the later 18th century.
