U.S. Springfield Model 1866 Second Allin Conversion Trapdoor Rifle This model is also known as the Second Model Allin. They were manufactured in 1866 based on Erskine S. Allin's trapdoor design and are the forerunners of the .45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifles and carbines. It was manufactured using an "1864" dated Springfield Model 1863 rifle-musket fitted with casehardened breech components. The barrel was relined for .50-70 metallic cartridges.
