Converted U.S. Springfield Model 1869 Trapdoor Pistol from the William Locke Collection Very few Model 1869 trapdoor pistols were manufactured by Springfield for field trials upon request of General W. Sherman who wrote: "...I wish you also cause to be prepared as soon as convenient prior to March 1, 1870, a carbine and single barreled pistol with the same or similar breech block as is now used in the Springfield musket, and capable of using the same identical cartridge. I do not suppose one can literally use a musket cartridge in the carbine and pistol, but each could use the same caliber, the same copper case, the powder alone varying in quantity, but the strength of parts should be adjusted so that in emergencies the carbine and pistol could use the musket cartridge." Some estimates suggest total surviving examples is around 7 or 8. Less than 50 in total were originally manufactured. Their rarity and thus value has meant that they are highly sought after and have been part of some of the finest American arms collections. It has also lead to well-constructed fabrications used to fill gaps in some collection. This example which was built using original Model 1869 cadet rifle parts. It is dated "1863" on the tail of the lock and "1869" on the breechblock. The stock is one piece instead of two, and the longer section ahead of the hinge varies from the short version, thinned version used on the pistols. This example is pictured on page 257 of "The Wm. M. Locke Collection" by Sellers. Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S. Model: Trapdoor BBL: 9 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 50 CF Finish: bright/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 24579 Class: Antique Condition: Good as altered to the present configuration.
