Rare Civil War Confederate Spiller & Burr Percussion Revolver Late production Confederate Spiller & Burr Second Model percussion revolver manufactured in 1864. This revolver was probably one of the estimated 762 guns manufactured by the Confederate government after it assumed control of the Spiller & Burr factory in Macon, Georgia, on January 7, 1864. Spiller & Burr manufactured an estimated total of 1,450 brass frame, Whitney Navy style revolvers at factories in Richmond, Virginia, Atlanta and Macon, Georgia between December 1862 and January 1864. This revolver has the distinctive brass, Whitney Navy style frame with full octagon barrel. The barrel has a brass cone front sight and Colt Navy style loading lever latch. The twisted iron, six-shot cylinder has safety notches between the percussion nipples. The cylinder has the distinctive twist marks found on Spiller & Burr cylinders. The hammer has hand-cut knurling on the spur. The revolver has two-piece walnut grips with brass screw escutcheons. The revolver serial number "II82", stamped on the bottom of the butt, underside of the barrel and top of the linkage between the lever and the cylinder pin. An illegible two-digit serial number is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. The top loading lever flat is serial numbered: "6491 K". The revolver components are stamped with three inspection marks: "G" on left side of the grip strap beneath the grip, "E" stamped on the right grip strap and "H" on the heel of the left grip. The revolver is not stamped with the Spiller & Burr markings found on the barrels of some revolvers. There are no "C.S." markings stamped on the revolver frame. Manufacturer: Spiller & Burr Model: Navy BBL: 6 7/8 Inch Stock: Gauge: 36 percussion Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 1182 Class: Antique Condition: Fair. The top of the frame has period damage and repair with a neat splice across the top strap at the hammer cut-out. The loading lever is a period replacement from a Whitney Navy revolver. The brass frame and trigger guard have a dark, attractive patina with scattered patches of age discoloration. The frame has scattered scratches and shallow dents and light file marks on the front flats near the barrel. The barrel has a smooth, deep brown patina. The cylinder has a dark, rough patina with heavy flash pitting on the rear face and percussion nipples. The safety notches are battered. The crudely finished hammer has a dark patina; the hammer face is battered and shows considerable flash pitting. The two-piece walnut grips are in fair-good condition with moderate handling wear. This is a solid representative example of a rare Confederate Spiller & Burr revolver that shows heavy service use with repairs and replacement parts that are typical of Confederate made firearms.
