Fine Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 "Centennial" Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter Manufactured in 1884. The rifle has the Third Style receiver with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges and special order half magazine, single set-trigger and highly figured fancy grade stock and forearm. The stock and forearm have Winchester "Style H" checkering and a piano finish. The pistol grip has a horn or ebony inlay. The barrel has a Lyman folding combination globe and post front sight and Lyman folding two-leaf rear sight with bright sight triangle and a leaf with a wide "v" notch. A folding peep sight with fifty minute graduations is mounted on the receiver tang. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The top barrel flat has the two-line legend ahead of the rear sight and "CAL. 45-75" behind it. "45-75" is stamped in script numerals on the cartridge elevator. The barrel, dust cover and loading gate are blue, and the magazine tip, forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are casehardened. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter which describes it as: "Rifle, Octagon barrel, Set trigger, Checkered stock with pistol grip, Casehardened" and "1/2 magazine". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on January 19, 1886. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1876 BBL: 28 inch octagon Stock: walnut checkered Gauge: 45-75 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 52159 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The barrel has 50% of the blue finish with wear on the edges and thinning on the top flat between the receiver and the rear sight. The dust cover retains 40% of the blue finish. 40% of the niter blue is present on the loading gate. 30% original case colors remain on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate, and the balance has faded to a mottled gray with silvering on contact points. The buttplate has some spots of age discoloration with some light pitting. The wood is very good. The piano finish has dulled slightly with age and shows handling wear on the sides of the wrist and rear of the forearm. The checkered panels show light-moderate handing wear, and there are a few scattered handling marks. This is a very fine example of a scarce and very desirable special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 "Centennial" Rifle.
