Special Order Antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle This is an example of an early special order Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle with "two" special order feature as manufactured in 1892. These two noted features are that it is equipped with a "half-round/half-octagon" 26 inch barrel, chambered in 40-82 WCF and a "button" or half-magazine. This rifle is standard in all other respects. The rifle has a Winchester blue barrel, magazine tube, bolt assembly and trigger with a niter blue loading gate. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. It has a straight grained American walnut stock and forend with a varnish finish. The barrel has a standard bead front sight with a buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight with serrated edges with the screw-adjustable center piece. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped in two lines with: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" with caliber "40-82 W.C.F." marked in front of the receiver ring. It has been fitted with an early narrow set of sling swivels; one dovetail mounted on the underside of the barrel with the rear sling swivel mounted approximately two inches behind the lower tang. The patent dates, "1884 and 1885" are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger with the serial number stamped in script numerals at the end of the lower tang. It is rare to find a Winchester 1886 rifle with "two" special order features, as the majority of the time if the previous owner bothered to order any special features, they usually choose several. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886 BBL: 26 inch half-round/half-octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 40-82 WCF Finish: blue/case colors Grips: Serial Number: 69065 Class: Antique Condition: Fine with 50% of the blued finish remaining overall with the round portion of the barrel having taken on an aged purplish/blue tint with minor light nicks and dings overall on the exposed part of the barrel. The receiver, hammer and loading lever retain 25% of their case colors with slightly more in the protected areas. The stock and forend are in very good condition with most of a revarnish finish remaining overall with the balance having flaked off. Both show minor handling marks and light pressure dents from actual use. A scarce early Winchester Model 1886 rifle with two special order features.
