Documented Two Digit Serial Number 48 Smith & Wesson No. 2 Old Model Army Two Pin Variation Revolver with Factory Letter and Holster The factory letter indicates this revolver was likely part of the 50 gun shipment sent on July 12, 1861, to J. W. Storrs in New York City, Smith & Wesson's sole agent from 1857 to 1869. The records confirm the barrel length, finish, and rosewood grips. It also notes that this was the first large shipment of this model, and each revolver cost $11.95. The "Old Model Army" was popular with soldiers, especially officers, during the Civil War and were also use by civilians including police officers and settlers headed west. This is not surprising given they were among the most advanced revolvers of the day and cost less than many of the percussion revolvers it competed against. This example has the correct two pin top strap only used in the 1-3000 serial number range. The top of the rib has "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD. MASS.," and the patent marking wraps around the cylinder. The "6." assembly marking is found on the barrel, cylinder, and left side of the heel, and the matching low serial number "48" is marked on the butt and the underside of the right grip panel. A leather flap holster with "308" marked belt loop and tooled border designs is included. Formerly in the well known John Otteman Collection of S&W Model #2 Army Revolvers sold in 2001. Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: 2 Army BBL: 6 inch solid rib Stock: Gauge: 32 Long RF Finish: blue Grips: rosewood Serial Number: 48 Class: Antique Condition: Fine and well above average condition for this early in production. Much of the original blue finish remains ranging from 30%-40% to well above in certain areas. Most of the loss is on the barrel, cylinder, and grip frame which display gray and brown patina and some minor pitting. The sides of the frame have some marks and minor fading but retain significant amounts of original finish. Subtle case colors remain visible on the hammer. The original piano finish grips are very good and have attractive dark tones, glossy surfaces, minor edge wear, and slight dings. Mechanically fine. The excellent period holster is very good and has only minor flaking.
