Desirable Smith & Wesson New Model 3 Single Action Revolver with Rare "0" Serial Number Prefix "Club Gun" Scarce 8 Inch Barrel Although the serial number begins with a "0", according to the accompanying factory letter this revolver is not listed in the zero serial number record book. The zero number guns were referred to as "Club Guns" and were manufactured from condemned parts for shooting clubs and individuals. No other information is in the letter regarding this revolver. Improved design of the original Model 3, Smith & Wesson's first top break, automatic ejection revolver produced from 1878 to 1908. Top of barrel rib is marked with the two-line address and patent dates "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT'D JAN 17 & 24. 65. JULY 11. 65. AUG 24. 69. APR 20. 75 FEB 20. & DEC 18. 1877 REISSUE JULY 25. 1871.", and the left rear is marked "44 S&W CTG" flanked by Maltese crosses. Blade front and notched rear sights. Six shot fluted cylinder with automatic ejector. Casehardened trigger guard, trigger and hammer, with remaining surfaces blue. Matching serial number on the butt, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. Fitted with checkered walnut grips. Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: New Model No 3 BBL: 8 inch solid rib Stock: Gauge: 44 S&W Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 034171 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 80% factory refurbished blue finish with some muzzle and high point wear, a few minor dings and some thinning to gray on the cylinder and barrel. The hammer retains most of the bright original case colors, while the trigger guard shows 60% original case colors with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The grips are also very fine with a few minor dents and dings, and crisp checkering. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
