Scarce Factory Engraved Gold-Inlaid L.C. Smith/Hunter Arms Co. Crown Grade Double Barrel Shotgun According to the information given on page 96 of "L.C. Smith Shotguns" by Brophy only 890 Crown Grade shotguns were manufactured between Hunter Arms Co. and the L.C. Smith Gun Co. between 1913 and 1945. Dual bead sights with light engraving around the muzzles, matte concave rib with gold-inlaid bar near the breech, and "L.C. SMITH CROWN GRADE" on the right barrel and "MADE TO ORDER BY THE HUNTER ARMS Co. FULTON, N.Y." on the left. Each barrel has a 1 5/8 inch wedge of fine scroll engraving just forward of the breech. With 2 5/8 inch chambers, automatic ejectors, and full/improved modified chokes. The receiver is fully engraved with fine scroll, leafy foliate designs, and hunting dogs on the lock plates with a pair of pointers on the right and setters on the left. The trigger guard and break lever are also finely engraved with a gold-inlaid crown on top of the lever. With dual triggers and a tang mounted safety. All visible serial numbers are matching. Checkered beavertail forearm and pistol grip buttstock with a solid rubber buttplate. The barrel and stock measurements are: chokes .040 (F)/.026 (IM); bore diameter at 9 inches from breech .730/.730 inch; minimum wall thickness .042/.042 inch; drop at comb 1 3/4 inches; drop at heel 2 9/16 inches; length of pull 14 3/8 inches. The receiver and lock plates have a mostly silver/gray patina with traces of subdued original case colors in the protected areas, sharp engraving, some small traces of some type of varnish, and handling marks. The wood is fine as refinished with a hairline crack visible on the left rear of the forearm, well-defined checkering and some faint sanding marks. Mechanically excellent.
