  • Provenance:
Donated by the artist to benefit Mighty Real/Queer Detroit.

    Notes:
Slava Mogutin is a New York-based multimedia artist, author, and activist exiled from Russia for his outspoken queer writing and activism. In 1995, he became the first Russian to be granted political asylum in the US on the grounds of homophobic persecution. In 2011, Mogutin was naturalized as a US citizen and legally changed his name to Slava. His photography and multimedia work have been exhibited internationally, including the Bob Mizer Museum in San Francisco, MoMA PS1 and Museum of Arts and Design in New York; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco; The Pacific Design Center in LA; Station Museum of Contemporary Art in Houston, and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, to name but a few. While his focus shifted to visual art, Slava remains a vocal critic of Vladimir Putin and his lasting anti-gay policies. (source: the artist's website)

Proceeds of this item's sale will benefit the 2027 Detroit Queer Biennial, GIVE ME TONIGHT: for all the dreams we've dreamed. An exhibition examining the vision and myth of the American Dream through the lens of Queer experience. Featuring both Detroit-based and international Queer artists whose work questions, reinterprets, or affirms the historical and cultural framework of America's founding.
