[18th Century PORTRAIT] Sir Ashton Lever (1729 - 1788) was an English collector of natural objects. In 1775, his Holophusicon opened to the public in Leicester Square. Captain James Cook was so impressed by Lever's collection that he donated objects from his own voyages to the museum. Lever's collection was catalogued by George Shaw. This engraving is by William Angus (1752-1821) an English engraver of copper plates for prints and book illustrations. Published in the European Magazine. Trimmed within platemark and without publication line. This is a Copper-Line Engraving, 1784. Size overall approx. 6-1/8 x 3-3/4 in. VG.
