Historic W. Clauberg/C.W. Simons & Brothers Presentation Quality Officer's Sword with Well-Sculpted Details Inscribed to a Civil War Pennsylvania Infantry Officer Measuring 37 inches overall with a 31 1/2 inch blade. The blade is a slightly curved double fuller style typical of Staff & Field grade swords, with a set of etched panels on the lower half topped with "screaming eagle" motifs and bearing scroll designs, martial and patriotic themes, with the Simon & Brothers (Philadelphia, PA) address etched on the right side and the Clauberg trademark stamped on the left. Finely sculpted leaf pattern decoration is present on the brass guard, with a double sided array of arms backed by a stand of pierced-through flags filling the space between the main body and the branch, and a laurel themed gilt pommel cap. The silver finished cast brass grip is also finely decorated, with a raised design of Liberty standing atop the globe beneath a field of 13 stars on the right side, and a gilt brass array of knightly arms framed with deep cut scrolls on the left. The iron scabbard is also decorated in well sculpted brass, with raised oak leaves on the tip, a raised Liberty on the middle band, an array of antique arms on the upper band, and a silver oval panel between the bands inscribed "Presented to/Capt. John L Luckenbach/from the Non Commissioned Officers and/Privates of Co F National Guard Regt/July of 1864". Records show John L. Luckenbach as a Captain of Company F of the 196th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The 196th mustered in during July of 1864 for a 100 day term of service, spending their time performing a combination of prisoner security in Chicago, Illinois, and provost duty in Springfield before mustering out late in the same year. Records on Luckenbach's service before and after the 196th are fuzzy, though there was a "John L. Lucenback" listed as a sergeant with the 72nd Philadelphia (aka the Fire Zouaves) from 1861 to 1863, discharged on a medical certificate; Civil War records occasionally show spotty spelling, and men returning to service after recovering from a discharge-worthy injury or being jumped up from NCOs to full commissioned officers are not unknown. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Very good overall. The blade shows a few light nicks along the edge, along with well detailed etching, a generally bright appearance, and traces of deep brown protective lacquer near the worn cloth washer. Fine detail is present on the guard and scabbard fittings, with traces of the silver finish in the protected areas and a well aged patina on the remainder, showing a few light handling marks and dents. The grip is fine, with attractively aged silver, and the scabbard shows a mixed brown patina with mild dings and spotting.
