Extremely Scarce Factory Engraved and Silver Plated Colt No. 2 Derringer in Very Rare .41 Centerfire with Ivory Grips Manufactured c. 1870 to 1890, this is an extremely scarce and very fine example of Colt's No. 2 derringer that is in the seldom seen centerfire configuration and found its way to Great Britain. According to Norm Flayderman, an estimated 200 of these derringers were produced in centerfire configuration, and they are extremely scarce on today's collectors market in any configuration. Only approximately 9,000 of these No. 2 derringers were produced in total, making them relatively scarce even in the standard rimfire configuration. Interestingly, the Colt No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 derringers were essentially produced and marketed concurrently until the No. 1 and No. 2 were dropped from production in 1890. These No. 2 derringers were one of the few Colt models to come standard with factory engraving across nearly all of the production run. This example has the standard flourishes of floral scroll engraving on the sides of the frame and top of the back strap. There are British proofs on the bottom of the barrel. The top of the barrel has the standard two-line address as well as the model marking. The bottom of the frame is stamped "P" in front of the trigger. The matching serial number is on the butt, bottom of the barrel, and partial matching number is on the inside of each grip panel in pencil.
