D.W. Harris Signed Cattle Brand Engraved First Generation Colt Bisley Model Single Action Army Revolver with Stag Grips This is a nice example of a Colt Single Action Army revolver originally manufactured in 1905 and subsequently engraved by noted cattle brand engraver David Harris. Harris was taught the art of cattle brand engraving by Weldon Bledsoe, who had in turn learned the art from Cole Agee, the originator of the cattle brand engraving. The revolver is nearly completely covered with cattle brand engraving. The brands are well executed in the typical Western style with the recognizable "2 Lazy 2 P", "XIT", "101", "HIT" and many other famous Texas brands with intermixed floral scroll designs and a punch dot background. The loading gate is also engraved with "#1" in a circle and there is a Texas Ranger badge on the recoil shield. The butt is signed "DW HARRIS". The only surfaces not covered are the front grip strap, the inside area of the trigger guard and the cylinder flutes. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line Colt address and the left side "BISLEY MODEL/COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". The left side of the frame is marked with the two-line, three patent dates followed by the circled Rampant Colt. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "711". Standard blade and frame notch sights, all nickel finish and fitted with two-piece stag grips. This is one of a matching pair of Bisley revolvers in this auction with identical engraving most likely done at the same time by Mr. Harris. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Single Action BBL: 7 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 44-40 Finish: nickel Grips: stag Serial Number: 269450 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Fine as masterfully embellished and refinished with 99% nickel finish remaining and showing some very minor pitting under the finish.
