SHIRO KURAMATA (Tokyo, 1934- 1991) for CAPELLINI.
"Side I".
Lacquered ash wood and aluminum.
Measurements: 170 x 61 x 52 cm.

The "Side I" chest of drawers designed by Shiro Kuramata for Cappellini is a sculptural and distinctive piece of furniture that defies the conventions of traditional design.

The body of the chest of drawers has an undulating, symmetrical design that generates an optical effect of movement. The black structure highlights the 17 white drawers at the front, emphasizing its verticality and visual lightness. The handles consist of small, minimalist, cylindrical aluminum knobs that line up vertically in the center of each drawer. The piece features casters that add functionality and complement the dynamism of the design with mobility.

Kuramata, known for fusing art and design, created this dresser as a piece that goes beyond utilitarian. The undulation suggests fluidity and dynamism, in tune with his interest in the ethereal and surreal. "Side I" is both a functional object and a contemporary sculpture.

Shiro Kuramata, born in Tokyo in 1934, was one of the most influential designers of the Japanese avant-garde in the second half of the 20th century. He graduated from the Tokyo National School of Design in 1953 and then worked in an architecture and design firm. Kuramata founded his own design studio in 1965, where he began experimenting with unconventional materials and innovative forms. Throughout his career, Kuramata was noted for his distinctive style and his ability to fuse Western and Eastern aesthetics in his designs. His unconventional approach and experimentation with new materials allowed him to create unique, cutting-edge furniture that challenged traditional design conventions. In addition to the Revolving Cabinet, Shiro Kuramata is known for other iconic pieces such as the Glass Chair and the Miss Blanche Chair. His work has been exhibited in museums around the world and has been recognized with numerous awards and distinctions. Although Shiro Kuramata passed away in 1991, his legacy lives on as an inspiration to designers and lovers of art and design. His ability to take beauty and functionality to a new level remains a source of admiration and his influence on the world of design endures to this day.
