Sharps New Model 1863 Cartridge Conversion Carbine This carbine is numbered in the New Model 1863 range and was manufactured in 1863-1865 for use by the Union during the Civil War. It was one of 31,098 rifles and carbines selected for conversion by Sharps for the U.S. Ordnance Department in the late 1860s. It is one of 27,00 refurbished, converted, and outfitted with a three groove relined barrel chambered for the .50-70 U.S. cartridge. Includes two extra forearms (one old and one new). Manufacturer: Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company Model: 1863-Carbine BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 50-70 U.S. Govt Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 86181 Class: Antique Condition: Fine as arsenal refurbished with 75% plus of the blue finish and 50% of the original case colors. There is brown and gray patina on the faded areas and some slight spotting. The reoiled wood is fine and has some dings, slight chips, and scattered scratches. It is mechanically excellent and has mostly clear markings. One of the spare forearms is modern and near new. The other appears antique and has some minor surface chipping and scratches.
