SCOTTISH LEGAL DOCUMENT IN LATIN RECOGNIZING INHERITANCE RIGHTS

Scottish legal document written on vellum in Latin, dating to 1677 (anno Domini millesimo septingentesimo septimo),executed in the New Council House of the Burgh of Edinburgh. It is an "Inquisitio" (formal inquiry or retour/inquest), a type of document commonly used in Scottish legal practice to establish heirship and legitimacy before a jury of burgesses. The document was conducted before the honorable Archibald Cockburn, Bailie of the burgh, and was subscribed by a panel of named Edinburgh burgesses and merchants acting as jurors, including figures such as George Walker, William Drummond, Robert Blackwood, and others. The inquest concerned one Jacobus Di Brome (Jacob Di Brome), a merchant in Amsterdam, establishing that he was the legitimate and nearest heir of a deceased Jacobus Di Brome his father, and that he was of lawful age. The document is signed by George Home as clerk, extracting the record from the burgh court books of Edinburgh. Below the main text is a certification clause in a second hand, confirming this as a true copy (vera copia) of the principal retour remaining in Chancery, collated and certified by Donald Campbell, a notary deputized under the Director of Chancery, with his subscription and signet. This type of document — a service of heirs — was the standard Scottish legal mechanism for formally recognizing inheritance rights. Unframed.
