Scarce Yovanovitch Model 1931 Semi-Automatic Prototype Pistol Serial Number 15 In 1962, this pistol was described by Dr. Joseph H. Matthews in Vol I of his three volume set of semi-automatic pistol guides. Additionally, in Dec. 2015, this pistol was the focus of a technical article in the magazine the "Small Arms Review" explaining that this pistol was designed circa 1934-35 by Lazar Yovanovitch, a Yugoslavian officer and engineer. This model is has a blowback operated mechanism with minimal parts that uses a striker designed firing pin. It is chambered for the 9m/m kurz cartridge (380 ACP). Prior to WWII, he presented this pistol to the Yugoslavian government for use as a potential military semi-automatic pistol. The military disapproved his patent for the pistol and the design was eventually rejected. In 1941 as a young petty officer, Yovanovitch was on duty in the Bay of Kotor; unfortunately, in April of that year, Yugoslavia was invaded by Germany and Italy. His original pistol was left at home where it was lost/destroyed during the invasion. He was eventually captured and interned until after WWII when he eventually relocated to Canada. It was during his time in Canada that he attempted to revive his original 1931 pistol design. To help accomplish this he used an original FN Herstal Yugoslavian Model 1922 barrel as a starting point. It has a unique one-piece tubular slide/upper receiver with an internal recoil spring around the barrel just like the Browning Model 1922. This slide/upper receiver is mated to a simple one-piece frame forging with a bottom magazine release and a single safety lever on the left side. The upper receiver is marked "Patent L. YOVANOVITCH/MODEL 1931." The original barrel is marked on the right side of the chamber: "Kal 9 m/m/F.N." The safety area of the frame is marked "OD" and "ZA" for fire and safe. The pistol is serial numbered "15" on the rear of the frame and the side of the magazine release. It is fitted with smooth walnut grips that are stamped with serial number "20" on the back sides. It has a very comfortable ergonomic design that is easy to hold and aim. It has an all blued metal finish. The magazine is absent. Manufacturer: Yugoslavia Model: 1931 BBL: 4 3/8 inch round Stock: Gauge: 9 mm Kurz (380 Auto) Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 15 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Fine with 70% of the original blue finish remaining overall with edge and high spot wear with blue loss mixed with a brown patina on the grip straps. The grips are in very good condition with minor handling marks overall with some heavier pressure dents on the right side. Missing the magazine. An interesting and very rare pistol design.
