Scarce World War II Case V-42 Stiletto with Sheath A descendant of the Fairbairn-Sykes combat knife, the V-42 Stiletto was designed with input from members of the First Special Service Force, the joint American/Canadian arctic and mountain warfare unit that is considered one of the forefathers of modern American Special Forces. The majority went to the 1st SSF, but around 70 were diverted to the Navy and among the armament issued to the light cruiser U.S.S. Omaha. The stiletto measures 12 1/8 inches overall with a 6 7/8 inch double edged hollow ground blade showing the signature serrated "thumbprint" on the ricasso above "CASE". The alloy guard is fitted with a thick leather finger pad on the underside with a ribbed leather washer grip and distinctive "skull crusher" pommel. The brown leather sheath is been shortened from its original long drop configuration to a more traditional style web/belt mount (a typical modification for V-42s), with a set of steel reinforcement plates on either side near the tip, stitched and riveted construction, a crude swastika scratched into the tip and a struck-out marking over "1-71M-M" on the front. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fair with 50% of the original blue finish on the steel components, mild spotting concentrated on the pommel, and some scuffing on the grip. A small section of the tip has been broke off, and the affected area having been "squared off"; though the history of the stiletto has gone unrecorded, previous V-42s have been seen with snapped tips described as battle damage by prior owners from striking human bones while being used for their designed tasks. The scabbards is rough with some cracking and tearing; the struck out marking consists of 3 figures and 5 figures, but no documentation is available.
