Scarce War of 1812 Era Evans Contract Flintlock Pistol A limited number of these pistols based on the French AN XIII cavalry pistol were manufactured in the War of 1812 era under contract with the one or more states by Edward Evans of Evansburg, Pennsylvania, likely on contract with the state governments of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Some examples have been found with 1814 markings suggesting a rough year of manufacture for the group. See page 195 of "United States Martial Flintlocks" by Reilly for comparison with two documented examples. The current pistol matches mostly closely the upper example and is marked "EVANS" on the lock at center and has a "P" in a circle stamped on the barrel on the left side at the breech. The stock is unmarked on the exterior, but it and the bottom of the barrel have "XXIII" markings in concealed areas under the lock and on the bottom at the breech as does the side of the barrel tang screw. The inside of the lock has a rough "H" stamp. A tapered iron ramrod with button head is fitted below the barrel. Manufacturer: American Model: Flintlock BBL: 8 7/8 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 72 Finish: bright Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good. The iron has mild to moderate pitting and oxidation and blended gray and brown patina. The brass has an aged patina. The refinished, slightly undersized stock is also good and has a chip at the breech by the cock and others at the front of the lock plate, a minor hairline crack at the rear lock screw on the left, and some bruising and minor scrapes throughout. The lock is mechanically fine, and most of the markings are distinct. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an interesting War of 1812 era pistol absent from even many of the most advanced collections. Reilly notes in the work noted above, "The Evans pistols are among the true rarities in American martial arms with fewer than a dozen specimens known."
