Scarce U.S. Simeon North Model 1833 Hall Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine with Ramrod Bayonet The Model 1833 is very significant as the first U.S. adopted percussion firearm and also the first U.S. martial arm to employ an underbarrel bayonet that slides into the ramrod channel. 1,028 were manufactured in .58 caliber in 1834 and 6,135 were manufactured in .52 caliber in 1836-1839 per page 561 of "Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition". This example retains its original .52 caliber smoothbore. Many of these were updated with six-groove rifling during their service life. The Model 1833 was primarily used by the 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoons in the Indian Wars, including the Seminole Wars in Florida, and some remained in use during the Civil War. "U.S/S. NORTH/MIDLtn/CONN/1839" is marked on top of the breech block. "NWP" (Nahum W. Patch) inspection initials marked on the upper left of the breech area, an oval script "NWP" inspection cartouche is stamped on the left stock flat, and an oval script "M.P.L." (Mann Paige Lomax) inspection cartouche is stamped on top of the stock ahead of the buttplate. The stock has an implement compartment on the underside of the buttstock.
