1862 Civil War Era, EP-167, HB-137, S-99, Reed-JG24, Encased Postage Stamp, Twenty Four Cents, J. GAULT, Plain Frame, Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-4 (31 to 40 Known) according to Fred Reed. The 24 high denomination Encased Postage Stamp has a nice sharp violet 1861 Civil War US Postage George Washington stamp that appears very clean and attractive. It is positioned towards the bottom yet that allows for the displaying of its three stars and other details at top. The mica is has tiny trivial rim edge laminations at top and bottom with minimal circulation, otherwise its perfectly unbroken and clear. The case is a natural golden-chestnut in color with a smooth appearance and somewhat mottled tone reverse with several faint hairlines and sharp text as shown. Overall, a pleasing example of this scarce Twenty Four Cents denomination. A nice specimen for collectors wishing to complete either a full denomination or J. Gault merchant set. (VF Scott Cat. $2,250)
