Scarce Documented Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Standard Sporting Rifle with Scarce Semi-Deluxe Plain Pistol Grip Stock and Factory Letter The letter lists the rifle features as: "Caliber: 32/40", "Barrel Type: Octagon", "Barrel Weight: #2", "Barrel Length: 28 inches", "Trigger: Plain, Plain, Pistol grip stock" and "Sights: Mid-range Vernier and Wind gauge". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on July 16, 1894. The rifle has a blued octagon barrel and color casehardened "thickside" receiver, breechblock, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The forearm and special order pistol grip stock are straight grain American walnut. The pistol grip and forearm tip have ebony inlays. Winchester Model 1885 rifles with this special order, semi-deluxe, un-checkered, straight grain pistol grip stock are rare. The barrel has a Winchester wind-gauge globe front sight and a factory blank in the rear sight dovetail. A Winchester Mid-Range Vernier Peep Sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines in front of the rear sight dovetail. The caliber designation "32-40" is stamped on the top barrel flat in front of the receiver. "PAT. OCT. 7TH 79" is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger followed by the serial number, "67795", in script numerals. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1885-Rifle BBL: 28 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 32-40 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: 67795 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. The rifle is all original and retains nearly 97% plus of the original blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel has almost all of the blue finish, and the bore is bright. The receiver, breechblock and hammer have strong case colors. The case colors on the lever have faded to a mottled brown patina, and the case colors on the bottom of the buttplate have silvered. The semi-deluxe pistol grip stock and the forearm retain most of the original finish and are in excellent condition. Wear is limited to three very minor dents on the right side of the forearm and several nearly undetectable handling marks on the stock. This is an excellent example of a special order Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Standard Rifle with very scarce semi-deluxe pistol grip stock.
