Scarce Colt Fluted Cylinder Model 1860 Army Revolver Scarce, first year production, Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with fluted cylinder, 7 1/2 inch barrel and four screw frame. The revolver has a silver plated brass trigger guard, steel back strap and one-piece walnut grip. The frame has stock cuts in the recoil shields and there is a notch for the stock yoke in the bottom of the back strap. There is a capping channel in the recoil shield cut-out. "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame. "PATENTED SEPT. 10th 1850" is roll-stamped in one cylinder flute. The full serial number, "1425" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and in one cylinder flute. All of the visible serial numbers match. Samuel Colt shipped revolvers to the Southern states until the actual outbreak of the Civil War in April 1861. Many of these revolvers were the newly introduced Model 1860 Army revolvers with fluted cylinders. Total production of the fluted cylinder Model 1860 Army is estimated at approximately 4000 pistols and surviving examples are scarce and very desirable. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1860 Army BBL: 7 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 44 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: 1425 Class: Antique Condition: About good. The revolver is all original and has not been cleaned or improved. The steel components have an untouched dark brown patina. Significant amounts of the silver-plated finish are present on protected areas of the trigger guard. The serial numbers and patent markings on the cylinder and frame are clear. The barrel legend is no longer visible. The wedge screw, frame screws and cylinder safety pins are battered. The percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder have moderate-heavy flash pitting. The action is crisp and functional. The grip is in good overall condition and retains traces of the varnished finish. There are minor dents in the butt and on the right side of the grip. This is a solid example of a scarce and desirable fluted cylinder Colt Model 1860 Army revolver that almost certainly saw service in the Civil War.
