SCARCE AND IMPORTANT MARKED UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA FREEHAND COBALT DECORATED STONEWARE "PEOPLE" JAR WITH LADY WERING A VEIL AND HOLDING A PARASOL ATTRIBUTED TO NORVAL GREENLAND (ACTIVE 1870 - 1882).
American (Southwestern Pennsylvania), mid- 19th Century. Cylindrical body with semi-squared rim, bold tooling at shoulder and waist, and applied lug handles. Stenciled across the middle "UNIONTOWN PA" with sponged double arch above and landscape with a woman holding a parasol and possibly wearing a veil between two willow trees. 13.5"h. Illustrated: Stoneware of Southwestern Pennsylvania" by Phil Schaltenbrand (fig. 79).

Cataloguer's note: Abner Greenland married the sister of John Wood Thompson, father of David Greenland Thompson of the Thompson family of potters in nearby Morgantown, West Virginia. Abner's three sons, John, Garrett, and Norval followed him into the stoneware trade. The distinctive decoration on "people" and "stork" jars made contemporaneously in both Uniontown, Pennsylvania and Morgantown West Virginia speak to the close connection between the two families of potters. The collectors from whom this jar was purchased referred to it as "The Bride Jar." For very similar, certainly related / similarly styled jar marked "UNIONTOWN, PA" see lot 449 in this auction.

Provenance: From The Second Installment of The Beth & Earl Trimble Salt Glazed Stoneware Collection.

  • Condition: Discoloration around rim and near left handle, minor crazing, minor glaze loss, some imperfections. (BH.7.20.26)
