SCARCE AND IMPORTANT MARKED UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA FREEHAND COBALT DECORATED STONEWARE JAR WITH CRANE ATTRIBUTED TO NORVAL GREENLAND (ACTIVE 1870 - 1882).
American (Southwestern Pennsylvania), mid- 19th Century. Well-formed cylindrical body with semi-squared rim, bold tooling at shoulder and waist, and applied lug handles. Stenciled across the middle "UNIONTOWN PA" with sponged double arch above and a large heron or crane (often also referred to as a stork) gripping a sprig in its beak and standing on a branch between two large weeping willow trees. 13"h.

Cataloguer's note: Abner Greenland married the sister of John Wood Thompson, father of David Greenland Thompson of the Thompson family of potters in nearby Morgantown, West Virginia. Abner's three sons, John, Garrett, and Norval followed him into the stoneware trade. The distinctive decoration on "people" and "stork" jars made contemporaneously in both Uniontown, Pennsylvania and Morgantown West Virginia speak to the close connection between the two families of potters. For a very similar, certainly related / similarly styled jar marked "UNIONTOWN, PA" see lot 443 in this auction.

Provenance: From The Second Installment of The Beth & Earl Trimble Salt Glazed Stoneware Collection.

  • Condition: Two concave dents on side of body done in the making, glaze and material loss, crazing. No illumination under U.V. (BH.7.20.26)
