Salvador Dali (1904-1989)(Attributed*): Elephant Walk, ink on paper, signed lower right, faint gallery stamp verso. Accompanied by certificate of attribution from art historian and painting conservator Bruce Wood, MFA.

Salvador Dali's “Elephant Walk,” ink on paper, is likely a study for his larger work, “The Elephants,” an oil on canvas from 1948. The elephant is a recurring theme in Dali's work and appears in many of his paintings. Elephants are typically symbols of strength and dominance due to their size, but Dali instead gives them long, spindly legs that look like they might snap in half. Dali makes the elephants appear weightless despite their usual bulk, creating an unusual psychological image. “The Elephants” is owned by an unknown private collector.
