Saint-Louis "Thistle" Cobalt Blue & Gilt Crystal Vase
c. 1950s-1990s, French
The Saint-Louis "Thistle" Cobalt & Clear Crystal Vase is one of the most prestigious, iconic creations by Europe's oldest crystal manufacturer, Saint-Louis Crystal. First introduced as a tableware collection in 1913, the Thistle (Chardon) pattern is renowned for its high-art blend of Art Nouveau inspiration and exquisite hand-craftsmanship.
The vase is crafted by overlaying intense cobalt blue glass onto heavy, brilliant clear crystal. Master artisans then cut precisely through the blue layer to reveal the clear crystal geometric panels underneath. The case features Thistle-inspired shape & cuts, fluted baluster body, flared rim, and vertical bevel cuts mimic the organic, sharp form of a thistle flower. The rim and tiered base are hand-painted with liquid 24k gold, which is fired and then meticulously hand-polished with an agate stone to achieve a brilliant, etched scroll pattern. The piece bears the circular acid-stamped Saint-Louis France logo on the underside of the base.
