Exceptional Smith & Wesson .38/44 Outdoorsman Post-World War II Transitional Double Action Target Revolver with Factory Letter and Box The accompanying factory letter confirms the barrel length, finish, checkered walnut grips and 1/10" under cut Patridge front sight. Note that the front sight is non-standard and other guns within the same shipment were also fitted with this same type of Patridge sight. It was shipped on October 2, 1946, as part of a 50 gun order to Harvan Sporting Goods Co. of New York City, a known special order distributor for S&Ws. The pistol also has standard S&W markings and an adjustable rear sight. Matching numbers are found on the butt, ejector shroud, cylinder and right grip panel. The assembly number "11954" appears on the yoke and crane. Comes with a blue knurled screwdriver, "Helpful Hints" pamphlet and the original factory box numbered to the gun and marked "TARGET." Provenance: Ray Cheely and Chad Gripp collections. Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: 38/44 BBL: 6 1/2 inch solid rib Stock: Gauge: 38 S&W special Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: S71453 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Excellent plus. The revolver retains over 99% original blue finish showing a cylinder drag line. Nearly all of the original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger. The grips are excellent with a minor pressure dent near the top (left panel) and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The box is very fine with some scattered minor wear and retaining nearly all of the end label. An awesome high conditioned N-frame revolver with a really unique Patridge sight that would fit very well in a post-war S&W collection.
