Rufus Choate Handwritten Legal Brief & Notes In Preparation for Trial
MD

A remarkable group of handwritten legal working papers, 2pp front and back, prepared by Rufus Choate (1799-1859), widely regarded as one of the foremost trial lawyers and courtroom orators of nineteenth-century America. The documents consist of several pages of densely written manuscript notes, likely created during the preparation of a legal argument, trial strategy, witness examination, or courtroom presentation. The pages exhibit the hallmarks of active legal drafting rather than formal correspondence. The writing is highly abbreviated, heavily revised, and filled with strike-throughs, insertions, underlining, emphasis marks, and reorganized passages. Numerous sections appear to be outlines, argument fragments, reminders, evidentiary points, or rhetorical prompts intended for Choate's personal use in court. Pencil notes on top of page, toning, else fine. Measures 7.75" x 9.75".

Rufus Choate was one of the most celebrated lawyers of his generation, serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, and Massachusetts Attorney General. He achieved lasting fame as a trial advocate and orator, handling major civil and criminal cases throughout New England and becoming renowned for his extraordinary courtroom eloquence. Contemporary observers frequently described him as among the greatest advocates in American legal history.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
