BIOGRAPHY:
Born in London, Ross Nicoll was the son of well known British artist Gordon Nicoll.
Ross moved to Canada in 1956 and the following year to Seattle, where he began to paint actively throughout the sixties, showing in exhibitions at the Frye Art Museum, the Museum of History and Industry and the Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair. His first solo show was at Seattle's Grosvenor Hotel in 1966,
the same year in which Craftsman Press used one of his paintings on their calendar.
In 1970 his employment moved Ross and his family to France and Belgium for several years, after which they moved to Florida for five years and then to California. During those years away from Seattle, Ross continued painting and, while in the San Francisco area, began again to exhibit, sell and win awards
for his work.
Returning to Seattle in 1988, Ross and his wife Rita settled in Kirkland, where he is now active in the local art scene.
He is a founder member of Kirkland's Parklane Gallery where his work is always displayed. He also belongs to the Eastside Association of Fine Arts (EAFA) and is an associate member of the Northwest Water Color Society (NWWS). His work can also be seen at galleries in Port Angeles and Port Townsend and
the Seahurst Gallery in Burien.
Several murals in downtown Kirkland were designed by Ross, including the twelve panels along the north wall of the Kirkland Antique Gallery (Park Lane), the "Parisian Corner" outside the Coffee and Cone (Lakeshore Plaza) and the Kirkland historical medley along the east wall of the F.O.E. building at Third
and Central.
Ross's work tells much about him; an engineering career, travels and life in many places and, most of all, his love of drawing.
He admires realistic or representational art and rejects the idea that an illustrator is not an artist. Surrealism also appeals to him because the distortion of forms takes the same skills as those required to paint them realistically. He believes that all graphic art is an invitation by the artist to share some visual
idea or experience; therefore it should be expressed in a language comprehensible to the audience.
