Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. Carved Roman agate intaglio, ovoid in form, engraved with a left-facing bust of a bearded, mature male figure wearing a toga, later set within a 19th-century European gold ring. Such portraits often represented philosophers, statesmen, or idealized Roman citizens. The banded agate is polished to a soft sheen that enhances the depth of the engraved lines. Intaglios of this kind served in antiquity as personal seals, pressed into wax to authorize documents and worn as signs of education and rank; during the 19th-century revival of Classical taste, ancient gems were collected and remounted in contemporary settings, as here, where the gold mount's shoulders are worked with stylized classical ornament. Size of intaglio: 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); of ring: 1.1" L x 1" W (2.8 cm x 2.5 cm); weight: 6.7 grams; US ring size: 8.25.

Provenance: private London, United Kingdom collection; ex-private German collection; ex-private C. E. Schultze collection, Munich, Germany, late 1980s
