Unique U.S. Rock Island Arsenal Marked 1903 Ordnance Cutaway Rifle with Plaque Based on the various components and assemblies it appears that this rifle was possibly fabricated by Remington as it has many of the early WWII 1903 Remington parts and used a late production all blued 1903 Rock Island Arsenal receiver. This combination makes sense because when the Rock Island Arsenal production ceased in 1922/23 all left over parts were sent to Springfield Armory for assembly into rifles or used as spare parts. In 1942 all the left over parts, tooling, fixturing and gauging were sent to Remington Arms for production of the early 1903 and 1903 modified rifles. In this case the receiver and barrel were converted into a cutaway rifle for training purposes. The receiver is marked: "US./ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL./MODEL 1903." (with NO serial numbered ever applied) which has been fitted with a late Springfield Armory 1903 barrel, that is marked: "SA/Ordnance bomb proof/3-28". It has an early Remington 1903 bolt that is marked with the large "R" stamp on the underside of the bolt handle. The bolt was left in the white and has been cutaway on the left to show the firing pin and firing pin spring and left of the bolt head to show the firing pin hole in the bolt. It is also fitted with all milled 1903 parts, with the early WWII Remington type green parkerized type finish. The rifle is fitted with an early WWII Remington type 1903 (modified) two bolt, "S" type walnut stock without the standard finger grooves with an early WWII high hump handguard. The right side of the buttstock is affixed with a small brass plaque that reads: "PROPERTY OF/U.S. GOVERNMENT/BUREAU OF ORDNANCE". The rifle itself has been cutaway, in "11" different areas to show the inter-workings of the rifle, probably for instruction purposes. The various areas show the rifling and chamber area of the barrel, the locking lug area of the receiver, inside the magazine box, sear, disconnector and striker engagement, and the inside of the buttstock storage area. Although assembled for instruction purposes these are a very uncommon rifle as most were just scrapped after the war. Manufacturer: Rock Island Arsenal Model: 1903 BBL: 24 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 30-06 Finish: blue/parkerize Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Very good as assembled as arsenal refurbished/reworked of the combination all blued receiver and green parkerized metal parts. The bolt body as noted remains in the white with pitting. The revarnished stock and handguard also show a nice matching medium brown oil finish with no proof marks. Mechanically fine.
