Scarce Non-Engraved Remington-Rider Magazine Pistol with Rare Blue and Casehardened Finish These pistols are based on designs by Joseph Rider, one of Remington's principle engineers at the time, and were manufactured from 1871 to 1888. Most were factory engraved making plain examples harder to find and thus desirable. Nickel plating was also the most common finish. The Rider pistols are among the first cartridge firearms to use tubular magazines, and they offer six shots in a package roughly the same size as Remington's famous two shot derringers. Other small, multi-shot handguns from the period generally had multiple barrels or chambers to increase ammunition capacity, and many pocket pistols remained single shot. This example has "F L K" stamped on the right side and top of the frame at the breech. These are presumably the initials of an owner. The top barrel flat has the two-line address and 1871 patent date marking, and it is outfitted with the standard sights and smooth grips. Manufacturer: Remington Arms Inc Model: Rider Magazine BBL: 3 inch part octagon Stock: Gauge: 32 XSRF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: rosewood Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good plus with 25% of the original blue finish concentrated in the protected areas, light original case colors still visible on the frame, and gray and brown patina and spotting on the balance. The grips are very good with small dings and scuffs and 50% plus of the glossy finish. Mechanically fine.
