Remington Hepburn No. 3 Sporting Model Single Shot Rifle This lever activated falling block single shot target rifle was designed by Lewis Hepburn and was manufactured from 1883 to 1907 with approximately 8,000 to 10,000 in total production. The top barrel flat is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y." ahead of the rear sight and "40. 1 7/8" on the underside ahead of the forearm. Rocky Mountain blade front sight and the rear sight has been removed. The lower left side of the receiver is marked "HEPBURNS PAT./OCT 7TH 1879" and the matching serial number is marked on the lower tang and lower barrel flat under the forearm at the breech. Following the serial number is "GREGORY". Blue barrel, niter blue breechblock, hammer and trigger, casehardened remaining parts, and mounted with a smooth forearm with a nickel plated iron forend insert, and multi-point checkered round knob pistol grip stock with a nickel plated brass Swiss style buttplate. The refinished barrel retains most of the blue finish with some mild edge wear and some minor dings. Much of the original bright niter blue finish remains on the small parts showing some minor oxidation on the hammer and trigger. The receiver has a smooth mottled silver gray patina with strong original case colors in the protected area around the lever and the upper tang shows 95% bright original case colors due to a tang mounted sight having been there for a time. 99% of the original nickel finish remains on the forend and buttplate. The wood is fine with some scattered minor dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
