Rare Remington-Bridgeport Model 1918 Mark I Pedersen Device Conceived late in World War I, the Pedersen Device was part of a service weapon concept that would see infantry armed with a bolt action rifle (the Springfield 1903 Mark I, not included) and a field-swappable device (seen here) compatible with pistol caliber rounds of similar bore dimension and detachable magazine. An infantryman so equipped would retain the same capacity for long-ranged precision fire as their typical rivals, while also having ready access to a pistol caliber semi-automatic carbine which could provide superior performance in a close-in fight. Had the war continued another year, the Mark I combination may have seen use in a hypothetical Spring 1919 offensive on the Western Front, though this opportunity to prove the concept in the field never emerged. While it is believed that approximately 65,000 Pederson Devices were manufactured, in 1931 an extensive purge of unneeded material from Army inventory resulted in the near complete destruction of the device and its accoutrements, with records showing 64,873 devices destroyed. The exact number of survivors is unknown but extremely limited, making the Pedersen Device one of the rarest Model 1903 rifle accoutrements, a rare artifact of World War I, and an intriguing look at a possible alternate development of Western small arms. The device measures 12 1/2 inches overall, with a 3 1/2 inch barrel shaped to fit inside the 1903 rifle chamber and adjustable head-spacing, a serrated charging handle marked "U.S.A. 1918-MARK I/8904" on the left in two lines and "REMINGTON-BRIDGEPORT/PEDERSEN'S PAT'S. PENDING" on the right. Magazine absent.

Class: Other

  • Condition: Very fine, with 85% of the original matte gray parkerized finish, with mild oxidization in the bolt catch area, edge wear, and handling marks. The recoil spring is absent, and the item mechanically needs work, although is clearly intact otherwise. One of the most elusive artifacts of 20th century arms development, and a missing piece from many 1903 collections.
