Outstanding Remington Model 1901 Rolling Block Target Pistol in Scarce .44 S&W Russian Caliber This pistol, which is chambered for the rare .44 S&W Russian caliber, has the original Model 1901 target sights, part octagon barrel with the one-line address, centerfire breechblock with offset thumb piece, and checkered forearm and grip and also has the Model 1891 style "P S" marking in addition to the standard two-line address and patent marking on the left side of the frame suggesting this frame is from a military inspected rolling block pistol. Rolling block pistol author and expert Jerry Landskron subscribes to the theory that Remington reacquired a large number of military surplus pistols to use in the manufacture of the 1901 pistol and No. 7 rifle. The recycling of the military receivers explains the "P" and "S" inspector markings found on this pistol (see "Remington Rolling Block Pistols, page 215). The hammer spur and trigger are checkered. "44 S&W R" is marked on the bottom of the round section of the barrel just ahead of the forearm, the octagon barrel section under the forearm has the serial number "1693" and the letter "H." The inside of the forearm is stamped with the number "32." The serial number "1693" is also stamped on the left side of the back strap. Both grip straps have the number "1666" on the left side. The grip is numbered to the gun ("1693"). The Model 1901 was the final Remington rolling block pistol manufactured. Remington manufactured rolling block pistols for many years. By the time Model 1901s were sold, much more advanced handguns were available, but the reliable and simple rolling block mechanism was still very well adapted to target shooting and marksmanship practice. Manufacturer: Remington Arms Inc Model: Rolling Block BBL: 10 inch part octagon Stock: Gauge: 44 S&W Russian Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 1693 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Excellent plus.
