Rare Pair of American Federal Carved Mahogany Klismos Chairs
c. 1810-30s., attirbuted to Duncan Phyfe, New York, paneled crest, crossed back, reeded stiles, slip seat, sabre legs

Note: The configuration of the back of these chairs centered by a segmented cross is seen in well-known examples from the Phyfe workshop, including a suite of twelve chairs made for Thomas Cornell Pearsall, now in the "Richmond" period room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a suite conserved by the House of History in Kinderhook, and chairs from the collections of Berry Tracy and Peter Terian. A chair attributed to Phyfe with this distinctive cross back and having reeded saber legs like those here is documented in J. Amory Haskell's house, Oak Hill. Reference: Davidson and Stillinger. The American Wing, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, p. 79, fig. 89. McClelland. Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency. p. 176, pl. 159. Sotheby's, New York, February 1, 1985, lot 778 and January 9, 2009, lot 180. McClelland. Ibid., pl. 160.
