RARE MODEL OF THE PRIVATEER FRIGATE "BELLONA"
France, After 1810
Three-masted vessel flying a flag off the gaff. Constructed from oak, with cedar, copper and glass fittings. Hull painted green. Displayed on a cradle.

  • Provenance:
Gift of John Templeman Coolidge to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1932.
Deaccessioned by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for the benefit of the collection, February 2026.

    Notes:
This model is believed to be the French privateer Bellone, which was a successful raider until her capture by the British in 1806 and incorporated into the Royal Navy as the HMS "Bellona". Governments commissioned privateers to attack enemy merchant vessels in times of war, having been issued "letters of marque" that licensed the privateers' owners to take prizes and cargo from enemy vessels. The taken goods were usually shared by the government and the owner of the privateer.
  • Dimensions: Height 92". Length 116". Width 92".
