Extremely Rare and Desirable Early Winchester "1886" Cartridge Display Board Produced in the mid to late-1880s, this is an extremely rare advertising piece for the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Cartridge boards such as this one were produced by the company and provided to retailers throughout the country as an eye-catching piece to exhibit the plethora of ammunition the company produced, as well as to get potential customers thinking about the wide range of firearms the company manufactured. These bullet boards would have been displayed in a wide range of retailers including sporting goods stores and hardware stores, with thought rarely being given to their potential value to collectors down the road. This has left an extreme few surviving examples available today, leaving them extremely collectible in essentially any condition. This is an early cartridge board issued by Winchester (collectors refer to it as the Model 1884). It is the first to use what will later become the "classic" design of green lithograph paper with the bullet information in gold print and the Winchester shells mounted directly to the board. The cartridges are in an inverted "V" with cartridges in an arch on each side, a circle of cartridges in the middle, and shotgun shells and six cap tins on the lower portion. The display is mounted in the original interior frame which is finished in gold (the outer frame is absent). It measures approximately 29 1/4 x 40 5/8 inches. There are two iron screw eyes added to the top of the rear framing.

  • Condition: Fine in untouched, original, "as found" condition, with the lithograph backing retaining distinct text and imagery throughout, some mild color fading, and some scattered light scuffs and scratches, while the frame retains much of the gold finish and has some minor handling marks, giving the piece a very attractively aged appearance overall. This is a highly desirable and rare Winchester advertising piece that would elevate the display of your collection!
