Extremely Rare Documented Experimental Walther Mod. MP/PP Semi-Automatic Pistol This is an extremely rare example of an early experimental Walther Mod. MP/PP double action pistol with the "exposed ring hammer" design and chambered in 9 mm parabellum. This pistol was essentially a scaled up version of the original Walther's Mod. PP utilizing the same blow back locking mechanism, only chambered for the 9 mm parabellum cartridge. It is estimated that these were produced in the early 1930s prior to the M.P. solid hammer and later AP pistol designs. The known serial number range for this series of pistol is from 5001-5010, with four pistol actually know to exist. This specific pistol serial number "5004" is shown/documented on page 66 and 67 in the book: "Walther Volume III 1908-1980, by Rankin and photographed on page 41 (serial number visible) of "P:38 Pistol: Volume One" by Buxton. The pistol has the same general configuration as the Mod. PP only with a 5 inch barrel and of course chambered in 9mm Luger as noted. The pistol features a 90 degree safety lever and a push button magazine release on the left side of the frame. The top of the slide has a milled sighting rib with fixed front and drift adjustable rear sights. The butt of the pistol is fitted with a military style lanyard loop. It comes with one original blued and unmarked eight-round magazine. The left side of the slide bears the Walther Banner followed by the two-line factory legend: "Waffenfabrik Walther, Zella-Mehlis (Thur)/Walther's Patent Cal. 9 m/m" followed by "Mod. M.P." The serial number (5004) is marked vertically on the right side of the frame behind the trigger. The right side of the slide, chamber area and muzzle are on the barrel are all stamped with the standard "crown/N" commercial proofmark. All components have a high polish, commercial blue finish. Manufacturer: Walther Model: Mp BBL: 5 inch round Stock: Gauge: 9 mm Luger Finish: blue Grips: walnut checkered Serial Number: 5004 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Excellent with 99% of the original blue finish overall, with only minor edge and high spot wear. The markings are clear and sharp except for the "Crown N" commercial proofs on the slide and barrel which are very faint due to polishing or a factory error, light strike. The walnut grips are in excellent condition with nice distinct checkering on the sides, showing only a few minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. An exceptionally rare, attractive, high condition early Walther Model M.P./PP pistol.
