Rare and Desirable Colt Paterson Improved Second Model Ring Lever Rifle This is a rare and highly desirable example of a Colt Paterson Second Model ring lever rifle. Colt manufactured approximately 500 of these rifles between 1838 and 1841. The rifle features an 8-shot cylinder and distinctive ring ahead of the trigger guard to cock the hammer and rotate the cylinder. The rifle has the loading lever mounted on the right side of the barrel lug, a small groove below the loading lever to accommodate a powder flask and a capping channel in the recoil shield. The cylinder with the horsemen and centaur hunting a deer and house in the background roll engraving has rounded shoulders. These features are consistent with the improved model version of the Colt Paterson ring lever rifle. The barrel is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "Patent Arm M'g. Paterson. N.J.-Colt's Pt." with distinctive star and snake terminals on either side of the address. The stock is walnut with an oil finish, cheekpiece and crescent buttplate. The serial number "304" is marked on the cylinder, ring lever, on the revolving collar on the cylinder keeper ring and on the keeper ring. The barrel has the number "339."
